Leif Garrett was the biggest teen idol of the planet in the 1970s before facing serious problems with the dark side of fame. For years, the former pop star battled drug addiction. Now 51, Garrett was interviewed by FOX 411 , which reflected how his stardom went into decline and advised young stars of today like Justin Bieber , do they follow in their footsteps.
Fox411: What advice would you give to Justin Bieber?
Garrett: Do not believe your own publicity. Find out who your true friends are is a full-time job. Every bad thing, every dealer, every hawk wants a piece of you.
Fox411: Do you see similarities between Bieber and you, when I was his age?
Leif Garrett: I do not know. I mean, our circumstances are quite different. This is something he really wanted to do, and he succeeded. I was acting. When you have that kind of power at a young age, and everything at your disposal, you put the bad boy image out. At this age, testosterone, hormones, so much money, you look for what else can and get away. He is also doing a lot of charity work.
Fox411: There are points of similarity between his relationship with Nicolette in the past, the relationship goes back and Justin with Selena Gomez?
Garrett : I figured it out. He (Bieber) rented the Staple Center for her. Fame, money is what separated us. Nicolette was starting as a model. My career was very good. We would give good or not. That’s the thing with me and Justin. There was no middle ground between them …
